Airport:

Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel (code HAM): International airport, 100 km south of Kiel. We recommend the airport bus called Flughafenbus Kielius (approx. every two hours from the airport to Kiel railway station). Ca. 100 minutes travel time, fare 30 DM per direction (with BahnCard: DM 15).
Second choice (IF YOU JUST MISSED THE Kielius bus): Use the airport shuttle bus (from International Terminal 4) to Hamburg main railway station (Hamburg Hauptbahnhof) (dep. every 20 minutes, fare about DM 10). Then the train to Kiel (every hour, travel time 60-80 minutes, fare

There is also a small Domestic airport at Kiel-Holtenau (code KEL) (flights to Berlin, Frankfurt, Bonn, Munich)
The airport Kiel-Holtenau is located 10 km north of the institute (Taxi recommended, fare approx. 20 DM, approx. 20 min).
Public transport (30-90 minutes, less recommended)

bus line 41, direction Hauptbahnhof, to stop `Universität' (crossing Westring/Olshausenstraße), then take line 12, 22, 32 or 10.
bus line 44 or 4 (direction Hauptbahnhof) to stop `Dreiecksplatz', then line 12 to Leibnizstraße.)

Ferries

Daily connections from and to Oslo (Norway), Göteborg (Gothenburg) (Sweden), Bagenkop (Denmark). Also Connections to the Baltic Countries. From Lübeck (100km east of Kiel) ferry to Helsinki (Suomi Finnland).

Railway

Kiel can be reached every hour from south via Hamburg Hbf (60-80 minutes). Local trains connect to Denmark via Flensburg, to Copenhagen via Lübeck and Puttgarden.

Local ferryWik - Holtenau and Holtenau - Wik

By car:

From highway A215 (from Hamburg): Where the highway ends, turn left (direction `Olympiazentrum'). This main street is named `Westring'. Do not turn left after 2.2 kilometers (do not take direction Eckernförde) Turn left after 4 kilometers, where you have reached the (old) campus with Audimax, library and the blue'n'gray university skyscraper. This street is named Olshausenstraße. Go ahead further 2 km to the next traffic light, there turn right into the `Leibnizstraße'. When you have passed under the small bridge, the buliding on the left is the Physics department. A parking lot is found behind the building.
From highway A210 (from Rendsburg, Flensburg, Denmark): Do not leave the highway at Kiel-West, continue to Kiel-Centrum. Then follow the instructions for A215.
From B4, B404, B76/202: Follow the signs to Eckernförde (B76) until you see the highway coming from left; then follow the instructions for A215. And now you can have a look at the city map (Physics/Leibnizstr. at the upper left)!
